Common Myths About First Aid and CPR (And the Truth Behind Them)

When an emergency strikes, what you do in the first few minutes can make all the difference. Unfortunately, many people rely on outdated advice or “tips” they’ve picked up from TV, movies, or family traditions. While these myths are widespread, some of them can actually make a situation worse.

The best way to be prepared is to learn the truth from a nationally recognised first aid and CPR course. But let’s start by clearing up some of the most common myths you’ve probably heard.

Myth #1: “Mouth-to-Mouth is Always Required in CPR”

The Myth: Many people think that CPR always has to include mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths.

The Truth: In reality, hands-only CPR (chest compressions without breaths) is effective for most adult cardiac arrests. Research shows that continuous compressions keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until professional help arrives.

Rescue breaths are still recommended in certain situations — for example, with children, infants, or drowning victims. In a HLTAID009 Provide CPR course, you’ll learn when breaths are needed and how to perform both methods correctly.

Myth #2: “CPR Will Always Restart the Heart”

The Myth: Movies often show CPR instantly bringing someone back to life.

The Truth: CPR doesn’t restart the heart. Instead, it keeps oxygenated blood circulating, buying precious time until a defibrillator (AED) or emergency medical help can restart the heart rhythm.

While CPR alone may not “fix” cardiac arrest, it can double or triple survival rates compared to doing nothing. That’s why learning proper technique is so vital.

Myth #3: “Put Butter on Burns”

The Myth: Old household advice says to apply butter, oil, or ointment to burns to soothe the skin.

The Truth: This actually traps heat in the skin and increases the risk of infection. The correct first aid treatment is to cool the burn under running cool water for at least 20 minutes, then cover it with a sterile, non-stick dressing. No butter, no ice, and no toothpaste!

Other First Aid Myths to Avoid

  • Tilt the head back for a nosebleed – Wrong! The person should sit forward and pinch the soft part of the nose to avoid swallowing blood.

  • Slap someone on the back if they’re choking – Not always safe. In training, you’ll learn the correct sequence of back blows and abdominal thrusts.

  • Only medical professionals can give first aid – Not true. With the right training, anyone can provide life-saving first aid until help arrives.

Why Accurate Training Matters

First aid myths stick around because they’re easy to remember or they “seem” logical — but they can be harmful. Taking a nationally recognised course like HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or HLTAID009 Provide CPR ensures you learn the latest, evidence-based techniques recommended by health authorities.

Training also builds confidence. In a real emergency, you won’t hesitate or fall back on bad habits — you’ll know exactly what to do.
